Identifying opportunities for achieving water savings throughout the Murray-Darling Basin

چکیده
Demand for water from the rivers of the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) continues to increase, despite a Cap on diversions being in place since 1996. Previous and ongoing efforts to improve water use efficiency within the Basin have focused primarly on engineering solutions, in particular through reducing losses from seepage, leakage and evaporation within the distribution system, including by upgrading channels or replacing them with pipes. Water trading is enabling water to be moved from low value to high value enterprises consistent with market demand. On many properties the instillation of improved water reticulation and application systems, including replacing some of the flood and furrow systems with sprinkler, trickler and micro-drip systems, is also achieving significant savings. A model was constructed to explore the potential for achieving further on-farm savings within the MDB through increased adoption of best management practices aided by low and high levels of investment. Despite significant limitations in the underlying data, it was shown that savings in excess of 900 GL per annum can be achieved on irrigated farms in the Basin, under reasonable time frames, and plausible scenarios for farm investment and the adoption of new technologies. Savings of this magnitude have the potential to provide a significant incentive to develop and implement policies that could bring them into being.

Achieving a successful long-term strategy for sustainable water resource management of the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) involves improving our understanding of the integrated hydrological system and assessing the impacts of land use and climate change upon this system. A methodology is currently being developed with the potential for addressing these issues by way of a new satellite technology sy...
متن کاملWater use and salinity in the Murray–Darling Basin: A state-contingent model*
The Murray–Darling Basin comprises over 1 million square kilometres; it lies within four states and one territory; and over 12,800 gigalitres of irrigation water is used to produce over 40 per cent of the nation's gross value of agricultural production. The supply of water for irrigation is subject to climatic and policy uncertainty. The object of the present paper is to show how the linear and...

The need for a consistent Statewide approach to the modelling of water and salt export across the Murray-Darling Basin has led to the conceptualisation of the 2CSalt model. The model was developed by State agencies and associated partners of the CRCCH and Murray-Darling Basin Commission. It provides consistent and transparent predictions of salt movement under current practice and is capable of...
متن کاملSpatially Distributed Investment Prioritization for Sediment Control over the Murray Darling Basin, Australia
Based on a spatially-distributed sediment budget across the Murray Darling Basin, costs of achieving a range of sediment reduction targets were estimated for a number of locations. Four investment prioritization scenarios were tested to identify the most cost-effective strategy to control suspended sediment loads. The impacts of spatial heterogeneity of sediment transport and varying the spatia...
